Types or Stages of Syphilis

  • Primary Syphilis: this is characterized by a painless ulcer known as chancre usually seen around the genitals but can also move to other parts of the body. The appearance of this chancre does vary between 10days to 3 months of infection.
  • Secondary Syphilis: at this stage, there is presence of rashes with brown sores that appears around 3 to 6 weeks after the chancre we discussed in primary syphilis disappears. This rash can appear at any part of the body and symptoms disappear after a few years.
  • Latent Syphilis: if syphilis get to secondary stage untreated, obviously it develops into latent stage where no symptoms may be seen.
  • Tertiary Syphilis: if syphilis gets to this stage, it becomes life threatening. It starts damaging vital organs like the heart, brain, eyes, nervous system, bones, joints and every other parts of the body.
