• Common among women with irregular periods
• About 8% of premenopausal women develop large cysts that may require treatment because it may increase your chance of having ovarian cancer
• Women who goes through some fertility treatment by ovulation induction with gonadotropins or other agents
• It may be caused by hormonal problems
• Use of drugs to help with ovulation
• Women with endometriosis
• Being pregnant, some cysts may develop in the early stage of pregnancy

These symptoms could mean that your cyst has broken open, or ruptured. Sometimes, large, ruptured cysts can cause heavy bleeding.

• If you experience pain with fever and vomiting
• If you have sudden, severe abdominal pain
• If you feel extremely tired or faint
• If you experience rapid breathing

Does Ovarian Cysts Require Surgery

The National Institutes of Health estimates that 5% to 10% of women have surgery to remove an ovarian cyst. Only 13% to 21% of these cysts are cancerous.
Your cyst may require surgery if you are past menopause or if your cyst:

• Does not go away after several menstrual cycles
• Gets larger
• Looks unusual on the ultrasound
• Causes pain

If your cyst does not require surgery, your doctor may:
