Early Signs Of Pregnancy: A large percentage of women who have no prior experience of being pregnant are always unaware when they first get pregnant. Most early signs of pregnancy & symptoms are being confused with fever, malaria, typhoid to mention a few by many.

Gestational Period In Human

The gestational period is simply referred to the period between conception and birth. It is simply the duration since the last menstrual period during which the embryo / fetus is developing inside the womb. Pregnancy usually last for 40 weeks / 9 months from the last menstrual period to delivery.

Forms Of Pregnancy

This simply means the different forms through which a woman can conceive. A woman can get pregnant either by having sexual intercourse or by assisted reproductive technology.

Sexual Intercourse
This is carried out by insertion and thrusting of the penis into the vagina for reproduction and sperm must be introduced or released into the female’s reproductive tract. It is this sperm that will then fertilize the egg inside the ovary naturally.

Assisted Reproductive Technology
This is a medium of getting pregnant with the aid of technology, example include:
Surrogacy: this is a situation where a woman agrees to carry a pregnancy for another person who will be the parent of the new born after delivery.

This is another example of assisted reproductive technology where an egg is combined with sperm outside the body.

Early Signs Of Pregnancy: What Are The Stages Of Pregnancy?

From the first day of the last menstrual period, pregnancy usually last for 40 weeks or nine months. When a woman becomes pregnant, the baby starts growing week by week.

Each week is quite unique with different conditions, symptoms, hormonal changes and physical signs. Every pregnancy can be classified into three stages, with each stage being called a trimester

First Trimester {Week 1 – 12}
At the first trimester, the early symptoms of pregnancy begin to show as the body starts adjusting to the hormonal changes of pregnancy. During the first 8 weeks, the developing baby is called embryo while it is called fetus afterwards till delivery.

Here are few among the many symptoms of pregnancy during the first few weeks:
*The first sign you will notice is missing of period
*There will be change in mood also known as mood swings

*The woman may have nausea and vomiting till end of the first trimester

*Frequent urination and fatigue

Second Trimester {Week 13 – 27}
Most of the symptoms earlier experience during the first trimester starts disappearing as the body now starts adjusting to the changing hormone levels. The baby bumps start appearing, the fetus begins to grow and the woman starts getting pregnancy weight especially in the front of her body.

Early Signs Of Pregnancy: Second Trimester Pregnancy Symptoms

The second trimester is characterized with the following changes:
*The breast continues to get bigger due to enlarging milk gland and deposits of fat
*As a result of increase body growth, some part of the skin especially breast, thigh and buttocks starts becoming stretched leading to presence of stretch marks
*The leg begins to ache as a result of excess fluids being retained for the body
*Pain in the back, pelvis and hips is also common because of the stress being put on them
Other symptoms include:
*Urinary tract infection; Heartburn; Nasal congestion; Stomach pain; Nosebleeds; Bleeding gums; Hemorrhoids; Skin changes; Dizziness; Increased appetite; Itching; Hair growth; Cramping; weight gain &Varicose veins

Third Trimester {Week 28 – 40}
At the final trimester, the woman’s enlarged uterus pushes against her diaphragm resulting into short of breath. It may become difficult to find a comfortable sleeping position as well as other uncomfortable feelings.

During the last stage of pregnancy that leads to delivery, you should expect the following signs:
*Frequent backache
*Shortness of breath
*Frequent urination
*Heartburn
*Breast enlargement
*Vaginal discharge
*Fatigue & Hip pain
*Leg cramps
*Constipation
*Abdominal gas
