Breast cancer is one of the cancers that mostly affect women. It is a kind of cancer that forms in the cells of the breast. On this post, we have selected top breast cancer terms you need to know for your own personal breast cancer awareness.

 Breast Cancer Definition

Breast cancers usually occur as a result of uncontrolled growth of breast cells that develops into a tumor and may spread to other parts of the body. More than 100,000 cases are being recorded annually in Nigeria.

There are three major parts of the woman’s breast namely lobules, ducts, and connective tissue.

 Breast Cancer Symptoms

The most common breast cancer symptoms are:

• Swelling of parts of the breast
• Unusual discharge from the nipple
• The nipple may turn inward
• Irritation around the breast and nipple
• Discoloration or thickening of the breast and nipple

Breast Pain

Women may experience pain if they have breast cancer but other health conditions or disorders can also cause breast pain. For instance, menstrual cycle or various hormones can cause changes in breast tissue that may result into pain or discomfort.

Painful Lump In Breast

One of the other signs of breast cancer is presence of painful lump but not all lumps in the breast are cancerous. Noncancerous lumps may be as a result other health conditions.

 Breast Mass

Breast mass are also known as breast lump, one of the signs of breast cancer. The mass may be painless, hard or have irregular shape; not all breast mass are cancerous.

Breast Cysts

Breast cysts are a fluid-filled sac within the breast and there are may be more than one cyst on the breast. It usually feels like a small water-filled balloon, may not spread to other tissues and often require no treatment. Breast cysts are usually not cancerous; it affects more than 100,000 people annually in Nigeria.

Breast Biopsy

Breast biopsy is a medical procedure where the breast tissue is being extracted for proper examination for signs of breast cancer or other disorders.

Breast Ultrasound

Breast ultrasound is an imaging test that uses sound waves to look at the inside of the breast to find out if there are any breast problems including breast cancer.

 Breast Cancer Screening

The following can be used for breast cancer screening:
• Mammography, an x-ray of the breast
• Breast Magnetic Resonance Imaging {MRI}, uses magnets and radio waves to take pictures of the breast
• Clinical breast examination

Breast Cancer Stages

The stages of breast cancer start from stage 0 up to stage 4

• Stage 0 Breast Cancer: Also known as carcinoma in situ, it is the preliminary stage of breast cancer with high survival rate due to the fact that the cell hasn’t spread at all.
Stage 1 Breast Cancer: At this stage, the tumor is larger than the previous stage and still hasn’t spread to other surrounding tissue but may have spread to the lymph nodes with a good survival rat if treatment starts early.
Stage 2 Breast Cancer: At this stage, the breast cancer is already growing and spreading but still within the breast and the nymph nodes. This stage is also subdivided into Stage 2 A and Stage 2 B with the size only the difference between the two. The 5 yrs relative survival rate is 93% if treatment begins.
Stage 3 Breast Cancer: At this stage, the breast cancer have extended beyond where it initially started to the lymph nodes and muscles but hasn’t gotten to the vital organs of the body. It is also referred to as the advance stage of breast cancer with the 5 yrs survival rate of 72%.
Stage 4 Breast Cancer: At this stage, the tumor has spread to other nearby lymph nodes, and other vital organs like the bones, liver, brain, and lungs. The 5 yrs relative survival rate is 22%.

Breast Cancer Treatment Options

Treatment methods include:
• Surgery includes the use of plastic surgery, tissue expansion by insertion of a balloon under the skin, removal of the lymph nodes / tumor, or total removal of the breast.
• Medical Procedure include using radiation therapy with the use of x-rays to kill abnormal cells
• There are also medications that can be used for breast cancer treatment
